Washington County is a county in the American state of Illinois.

It has a population of 14,716 people according to the 2010 census.

Nashville is the county seat. It is located in what is known locally as “Little Egypt” in southern Illinois.

On January 2, 1818, Washington County was founded from St. Clair County.

It was given the name George Washington.

Despite its proximity to St. Louis, Missouri’s Illinois suburbs, the county is not considered part of the St. Louis metropolitan area, often known as the Metro-East.

The county has a total area of 564 square miles (1,460 km2), of which 563 square miles (1,460 km2) is land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

This area is rich in lakes, rivers, streams, and creeks, notably the Kaskaskia River, which forms the county’s northern border.
