Warren County was named after American Revolutionary War officer Joseph Warren and was established by legislative act on December 22, 1809.

The county has a total area of 619 square miles (1,600 km2), of which 589 square miles (1,530 km2) is land and 30 square miles (78 km2) (4.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
