History
Ward County was created in 1887 and organized in 1892, named for Thomas W. Ward, a soldier of the Texas Revolution. Barstow, founded the same year by irrigation promoter George E. Barstow, briefly boomed as an irrigated farming colony — even winning a silver medal for its grapes at the 1904 World’s Fair — before a dam failure and drought collapsed local agriculture by 1918. The county’s fortunes turned on oil after the Hendrick field came in during 1926–1929. During the Second World War, Pyote Army Airfield trained B-17 and later B-29 crews; the Enola Gay, the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, was stored there after the war.
