It is in the southwestern part of the state.

Frederick is the county seat.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 879 square miles (2,280 km2), of which 871 square miles (2,260 km2) are land and 8.1 square miles (21 km2) (0.9%) are water.
It is right on the border with Texas.
