Stafford County (standard abbreviation: SF) is a county in Kansas, United States.

St. John is the county seat. The county population was 4,072 as of the 2020 census.

The county is named for Lewis Stafford, a captain of Company E, First Kansas Infantry, who died during the American Civil War at the Battle of Young’s Point.

Nomadic Native Americans lived in North America’s Great Plains for millennia. The Kingdom of France claimed control of major sections of North America from the 16th to the 18th centuries.

Following the French and Indian War, France covertly handed New France to Spain under the Treaty of Fontainebleau in 1762.

The county has a total area of 795 square miles (2,060 km2), of which 792 square miles (2,050 km2) is land and 2.9 square miles (7.5 km2) (0.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
