The county was founded in 1792 and named after Isaac Shelby, Kentucky’s first governor.

Shelby County is included in the Louisville/Jefferson County, KY-IN Combined Statistical Area. “Good Land, Good Living, Good People” is Shelby County’s motto.

Shelby County was established in 1792 on land donated by Jefferson County.

The county has a total area of 386 square miles (1,000 km2), of which 380 square miles (980 km2) is land and 6.0 square miles (16 km2) (1.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

Jeptha Knob is the highest point in the Louisville area, standing at 1,188 feet (362 meters).
