The county was made in 1855, and it was put together in 1867.

It used to be called Greene County, but in 1862, it was changed to honour William H. Seward, who was Secretary of State under both Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

The county is 576 square miles (1,490 square kilometres) big, with 571 square miles (1,480 square kilometres) of land and 4.5 square miles (12 square kilometres) of water, or 0.8%.
