Huntsville is the county seat, and Oneida is the largest town.

Scott County is famous for seceding from Tennessee in protest of the state’s decision to join the Confederacy during the Civil War, and for forming The Free and Independent State of Scott as a result.

The county has a total area of 533 square miles (1,380 km2), of which 532 square miles (1,380 km2) is land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
