Sacramento County is in the middle of the city of Greater Sacramento.
The county takes up about 994 square miles (2,570 km2) in the northern part of the Central Valley and into Gold Country.
Sacramento County goes from the low delta lands between the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River, which include Suisun Bay, north to about ten miles (16 km) past the State Capitol and east to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
