Richland Center is the county seat.

The county was formed in 1850 from parts of the Wisconsin Territory that were made in 1842.

Its name comes from the fact that the land there is very good.

The county covers 589 square miles (1,530 km2), with 586 square miles (1,520 km2) of land and 3.1 square miles (8.0 km2) (0.5%) of water. There are no other bodies of water in the county.
