Pope County is the county in the U.S. state of Illinois that is the most south-eastern.

According to the 2020 census, there were 3,763 people living there.

This made it the second-least populated county in Illinois. Golconda is the county seat.

The county was made in 1816 from parts of Gallatin and Johnson counties.

It was named after Nathaniel Pope, an Illinois Territory and State of Illinois politician and judge.

The county has a total area of 374 square miles (970 km2), of which 369 square miles (960 km2) are land and 5.5 square miles (14 km2) (1.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
