The Penobscot people in Wabanakik gave their name to the county of Penobscot in the U.S. state of Maine.

As of the 2020 census, there were 152,199 people living there.

This made it the third most populous county in Maine. Bangor is the county seat.

The county was made on February 15, 1816, from a part of Hancock County. At the time, the area was still part of Massachusetts.

The University of Maine is in Penobscot County.

The Bangor, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Penobscot County.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 3,557 square miles (9,210 km2), of which 3,397 square miles (8,800 km2) are land and 160 square miles (410 km2) are water, or 4.5 percent.

East Turner Mountain, at 2456 feet, is the highest point in the county.

It is right next to Baxter State Park.
