James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, is honored with the county’s name.

Monroe County, Arkansas’s 20th county, was established on November 2, 1829, and is home to two incorporated towns and three incorporated cities, including the county seat, Clarendon, and the most populous city, Brinkley.

There are also numerous unincorporated communities and ghost towns in the county.

Monroe County is Arkansas’ 22nd smallest county, covering only 621 square miles (161,000 ha).

The county’s population was 6,799 as of the 2020 Census.

The county has the fifth-smallest population of the 75 counties in Arkansas.
