Mitchell County was formed in 1861 from parts of Burke, Caldwell, McDowell, Watauga, and Yancey counties, and named for Elisha Mitchell, a University of North Carolina professor and scientist who died in 1857 after a fall while surveying what is now Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in eastern North America. The county’s mica and feldspar deposits drew industrial mining from the late 19th century onward, and Spruce Pine grew up around that mineral trade rather than as a farming town.
