Bloomington is the county seat.
The Bloomington–Normal, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area is made up of McLean County.
Around 1821, the first white people moved to the area that would become McLean County.[3]: 69 Blooming Grove was the first place to live.
It was set up in 1822 near where Bloomington is now.
On December 25, 1830, McLean County was made from Tazewell County. It was named after Senator John McLean of Illinois, who died in 1830.
The county has a total area of 1,186 square miles (3,070 km2), of which 1,183 square miles (3,060 km2) are land and 2.9 square miles (7.5 km2) (0.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
