Matagorda County is a county in the state of Texas in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 36,255 people living there.
Its county centre is Bay City, which should not be confused with Baytown, which is in Harris and Chambers Counties and is much bigger.
The canebrakes that used to grow along the coast gave Matagorda County its name. In Spanish, matagorda means “thick bush.”
The Bay City, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area is part of Matagorda County.
This area is also part of the Houston-The Woodlands, TX combined statistical area.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,613 square miles (4,180 km2), of which 1,100 square miles (2,800 km2) are land and 512 square miles (1,330 km2) (32%) are water.
Matagorda Bay is part of the water area. The Gulf of Mexico is right next to it.
