The state of Maryland is divided into 23 counties. Saint Mary’s County is the oldest (founded in 1637), while Garrett County is the youngest (established in 1872).

Montgomery County is the most populous, with a population of 1,004,709 people. Worcester County (1,800 km2) has the largest land area, whereas Baltimore City has the smallest (238 km2).
