Knox County is a county in the state of Maine, in the United States.
The population was 40,607 at the time of the 2020 census.
Rockland serves as the county seat.
The county was named after Revolutionary War general and Secretary of War Henry Knox, who lived in the county from 1795 to 1806.
The county was formed on April 1, 1860, and it is Maine’s most recent county formation.
It was formed by combining parts of Waldo and Lincoln counties.
The North Knox Agricultural and Horticultural Society organized the first Union Fair in 1868.
The county has a total area of 1,144 square miles (2,960 km2), of which 365 square miles (950 km2) is land and 779 square miles (2,020 km2) (68%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] By land area, it is Maine’s second-smallest county.
It was originally included in the Waldo Patent.
