Kennebec County is a county in the U.S. state of Maine.
It is in the south-central part of the state.
At the 2020 census, there were 123,642 people living there.
Augusta, the state capital, is the county seat. On February 20, 1799, the county was made from parts of Cumberland County and Lincoln County.
The Eastern Abenaki word knipekw, from which Kennebec gets its name, means “large body of still water, large bay.”
The Augusta–Waterville, ME Micropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Kennebec County.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 951 square miles (2,460 km2), of which 868 square miles (2,250 km2) are land and 84 square miles (220 km2) are water, or 8.8%.
