Juneau is Alaska’s capital city. The second-largest US city by area, it is a unified municipality in the Gastineau Channel and Alaskan panhandle.
After the U.S. Congress ordered the District of Alaska’s administration to move from Sitka in 1900, Juneau became Alaska’s capital in 1906.
On July 1, 1970, Juneau, Douglas, and the Greater Juneau Borough amalgamated to form the current municipality, which is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware.
