Jasper County lies in the piney woods of Deep East Texas, drained by the Angelina and Neches rivers, which meet at the county’s southwest corner. History
Jasper County was organized by the Republic of Texas in 1837 and takes its name from William Jasper, a sergeant killed in the American Revolutionary War who was celebrated for rallying his unit’s flag under fire at the 1776 defense of Fort Sullivan in South Carolina. Sam Rayburn Reservoir, completed on the Angelina River in the mid-1960s and named for the longtime Bonham congressman and Speaker of the House, submerged several old river-bottom communities and reshaped the county’s western edge into its present recreational lakefront.
