Geography
Iberville Parish straddles the Mississippi River, with a narrow east-bank strip around St. Gabriel and Carville and a much larger west-bank area that includes Plaquemine, the Atchafalaya Basin swamp toward its western edge, and farmland in between. The Atchafalaya Basin’s backwater lakes and bayous, including Bayou Sorrel and Grand River, cover a significant share of the parish’s water area. History
Iberville Parish was established in 1807, one of Louisiana’s original 19 parishes created after statehood-era reorganization of the old Spanish and French colonial districts. It is named for Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville, the French-Canadian naval officer and colonist who led the expedition that founded French Louisiana in 1699. The parish’s river frontage made it a center of sugarcane plantation agriculture through the 19th century; Carville later became internationally known as the site of the United States’ only leprosarium, the National Hansen’s Disease Center, from 1894 until its closure as a treatment hospital in 1999.
