Geography

The Connecticut River splits the county into two unequal halves, running north to south through Windsor, Hartford, East Hartford, Wethersfield and Glastonbury. West of the river the land rises into the trap-rock ridges of the Metacomet Range and the Farmington River valley; river-valley sections near the Connecticut and its tributaries are alluvial and flood-prone, while the western towns — Burlington, Canton, Hartland — are hilly and, in places, mountainous. The Farmington, Scantic, Podunk and Mill rivers all drain into the Connecticut within the county.

History

Hartford County was established on May 10, 1666, one of Connecticut’s original four counties, and named for Hertfordshire, England. Hartford itself was settled in 1636 by Puritan colonists led by Thomas Hooker; on January 14, 1639, Hooker’s followers adopted the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut in Hartford, widely regarded as the first written constitution in the American colonies and the source of Connecticut’s state nickname. The county’s history also holds one of the country’s worst fire disasters: on July 6, 1944, a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus tent fire in Hartford killed at least 167 people, prompting nationwide changes to circus and tent-venue fire codes.

Interstate 91 runs north–south through the county along the Connecticut River, linking Hartford, Windsor and Enfield toward Springfield, Massachusetts and New Haven.
