Geography
Floyd County is Indiana’s second-smallest county by land area, a knob of Silurian-age hills rising steeply from the Ohio River flats around New Albany. History
Floyd County was organized on February 1, 1819, carved from Clark and Harrison counties, and named for John Floyd, a Kentucky pioneer and surveyor killed by Native Americans in 1783. New Albany, founded in 1813 by the Scribner brothers on the Ohio River, grew through the 19th century into Indiana’s largest city, built on steamboat construction, glassmaking and plywood manufacturing before Indianapolis and Fort Wayne overtook it in population. The county’s river towns also served as a crossing point on the Underground Railroad, with escaped people moving north from Louisville through New Albany’s Second Baptist Church congregation and other local networks.
