As of the 2020 census, there were 20,600 people living there.
This made it the second-least populous county in Massachusetts. Edgartown is the county seat.
The Vineyard Haven, MA Micropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Dukes County.
The island of Martha’s Vineyard, which includes Chappaquiddick Island, the Elizabeth Islands, which include Cuttyhunk, the island of Nomans Land, and other nearby islands make up the county.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 491 square miles (1,270 km2), of which 103 square miles (270 km2) are land and 388 square miles (1,000 km2) are water, or 79%.
It is the third-smallest county in Massachusetts in terms of land area.
