History

Georgia’s General Assembly created Colquitt County on 25 February 1856, naming it for Walter
Terry Colquitt, a U.S. senator from Georgia. The county seat, originally called Ochlockoney, was
incorporated in 1859 and renamed Moultrie for General William Moultrie, a Revolutionary War
officer who defended Charleston in 1776. Norman Park takes its name from J.B. Norman, founder of
the now-defunct Norman College once located there.

No interstate crosses Colquitt County. US 319, US 82 and US 129 run through it, along with GA
33 and GA 111, connecting Moultrie to the surrounding region.
