Cobb County is a county in the United States’ state of Georgia, located in the Atlanta metropolitan area in the state’s north central region.
The population was 766,149 as of the 2020 Census.
Marietta is the county seat and the major city.
Cobb County, along with several neighboring counties, was established by the Georgia General Assembly on December 3, 1832, from the large Cherokee County territory—land northwest of the Chattahoochee River that the state acquired from the Cherokee Nation and redistributed to settlers via lottery following the passage of the federal Indian Removal Act.
Cobb County was named after Thomas Willis Cobb, a Georgia congressman and senator.
The county has a total area of 345 square miles (890 km2), of which 340 square miles (880 km2) is land and 4.0 square miles (10 km2) (1.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The county is located in the state’s upper Piedmont region, with a few mountains inside it that are regarded to be the southernmost extensions of the Appalachian Mountains.
