Clermont County lies in the outer Cincinnati metro area on the north bank of the Ohio River, with rolling hills and creek valleys typical of the county’s position at the western edge of Appalachian Ohio. History
Clermont County was organized on December 6, 1800, from part of the Northwest Territory’s original Hamilton County — Ohio’s eighth-oldest county and the westernmost county of Appalachian Ohio. Its name comes from Clermont-Ferrand, the French home region of several early Virginia Military District land agents. Point Pleasant, on the Ohio River, is the birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant; the village of Utopia was briefly home to a Fourierist commune in the 1840s before its riverside buildings were swept away by an 1847 flood.
