Augustin Smith Clayton (1783–1839) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1832 to 1835. The county was made in 1858 and named after him.
The county has a total area of 144 square miles (370 km2), of which 142 square miles (370 km2) are land and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) (1.9%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
It has the third-smallest area of any Georgia county.
