It was named for Fort Churchill, which is now in Lyon County. Fort Churchill was named for General Sylvester Churchill, a hero of the Mexican–American War who was Inspector General of the U.S. Army in 1861.

The county is 5,024 square miles (13,010 square kilometres) big, with 4,930 square miles (12,800 square kilometres) of land and 94 square miles (240 square kilometres) of water, or 1.9%.
