Elmira is the county seat.
It got its name from an Indian village in Delaware whose name meant “big horn.”
The Elmira, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is made up of Chemung County, is also part of the Elmira-Corning, NY Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 411 square miles (1,060 km2), of which 407 square miles (1,050 km2) are land and 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2) (0.8%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
