Cannon County is a part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN.

On January 31, 1836, the Tennessee state legislature set up Cannon County.

It was made up of parts of Rutherford, Smith, Wilson, and Warren counties, and it was named for Governor Newton Cannon.

This was part of Middle Tennessee, where people raised both crops and animals, like thoroughbred horses.

The county has a total area of 266 square miles (690 km2), of which 266 square miles (690 km2) are land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 km2) (0.02%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
