Camas County is located in the southern part of the state of Idaho.

Fairfield is the county seat and the major city.

The Idaho Assembly founded the county 106 years ago on February 6, 1917, with the separation of Blaine County.

It is named after the camas root, or Camassia, a lily-like plant with an edible bulb prevalent in the region and used as a food source by Native People and settlers.

The population was 1,077 as of the 2020 census, making it the state’s second-least populous county after Clark County.

Camas County falls under the jurisdiction of the Hailey, ID Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 1,079 square miles (2,790 km2), of which 1,074 square miles (2,780 km2) is land and 4.5 square miles (12 km2) (1.0%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

Camas County Highpoint, at 10,337 feet (3,151 meters), is located on the county’s northern boundary with Blaine County.
