The state of California is divided into 58 counties. Butte County is the oldest (founded in 1850), whereas Imperial County is the youngest (established in 1907).

Los Angeles County is the most populous, with a population of 10,163,507 people. San Bernardino County has the most land area (1853 km2), whereas San Francisco County has the smallest (122 km2).
