The county was first made in 1734 as Bladen Precinct. In 1739, it became a county.

The county has a total area of 887 square miles (2,300 km2), of which 874 square miles (2,260 km2) are land and 13 square miles (34 km2) (1.4%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

It has the fourth-largest land area of any county in North Carolina.
