On September 22, 1862, a portion of Wasco County was partitioned off to form the county.

The county has a total area of 3,088 square miles (8,000 km2), of which 3,068 square miles (7,950 km2) is land and 20 square miles (52 km2) (0.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
