As of the census in 2020, there were 46,456 people living there.
Belmont is the county seat.
Its name comes from a Lenape word that European-American settlers in the western part of New York State used to describe a trail that ran along the Allegheny River.
This is also how the county got its name.
The county has a total area of 1,034 square miles (2,680 km2), of which 1,029 square miles (2,670 km2) are land and 5.1 square miles (13 km2) (0.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
