Alexander County is the southernmost and westernmost county in the United States of America’s state of Illinois.
The population was 5,240 at the time of the 2020 census.
Its county seat is Cairo[2], and the Mississippi River forms its western boundary.
Alexander County is part of the Cape Girardeau, MO-IL MSA, which includes governments on both sides of the Mississippi River.
The county has a total area of 253 square miles (660 km2), of which 236 square miles (610 km2) is land and 17 square miles (44 km2) (6.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Its borders are defined in part by the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.
The Mississippi River’s lowest point in Illinois is in Cairo, Alexander County, where it flows out of Illinois and into Kentucky.
