Geography

Sevier County sits on the Central Utah Plateau, where forested, northeast-southwest mountain
ridges break up a semi-arid but arable valley floor. The high point is Fish Lake Hightop, at
11,633 feet (3,546 metres), inside Fishlake National Forest. The forest also holds Fish Lake
itself and Pando, a single clonal quaking aspen grove covering about 106 acres that researchers
count among the largest living organisms on Earth. The Sevier River, which gave the county its
name, runs the length of the valley through Richfield, Monroe, Elsinore, Joseph, Sevier and
Aurora on its way north to Sevier Lake.

History

The Utah territorial legislature organized Sevier County on January 16, 1865, carving it out of
Sanpete County and naming it for the Sevier River. Mormon settlers under Albert Lewis had reached
the Richfield area a year earlier, in January 1864, drawn by fertile soil and nearby timber.
Settlement across the county was interrupted by the Black Hawk War: Glenwood’s stone fort,
built in 1866, was briefly abandoned in 1867 during the fighting between Ute and Mormon
settlers before residents returned in 1868. Later communities grew around specific resources
— Danish converts founded Elsinore in 1874 and nicknamed it “Little Denmark,”
while Salina’s 1891 rail connection turned it into a transportation hub for coal and
livestock moving out of the valley.

Interstate 70 crosses the county east–west and meets US‑89, which runs
north–south through Richfield, Monroe and Elsinore. US‑50 and state routes 24, 62, 72,
76, 118, 119 and 120 fill out the local network.
