Victoria County was formed in 1836 by the Republic of Texas, one of the original counties created after independence. It takes its name from Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of Mexico, honoring the earlier Mexican-era settlement of Victoria founded on the same site by empresario Martín De León in 1824. The county’s WWII-era Foster Field and Aloe Army Air Field trained pilots before Aloe Field was converted into today’s Victoria Regional Airport.
