History
The North Carolina General Assembly created Ashe County in 1799 from part of Wilkes County, naming it for Samuel Ashe, a Revolutionary War patriot who served as the state’s governor from 1795 to 1798. Its isolation in the Blue Ridge kept the county sparsely settled and largely self-sufficient well into the 20th century, until better roads and the completion of the Blue Ridge Parkway opened it to tourism and, later, second-home development from nearby Boone and the Piedmont.
