Geography
Thomas County lies in the Nebraska Sandhills, a landscape of grass-stabilized dunes with almost no natural surface water outside its river valleys. History
Thomas County was organized in 1887 and named for Union Civil War general George H. Thomas. Like much of the surrounding Sandhills, it filled slowly with homesteaders after passage of the 1904 Kinkaid Act, which allowed 640-acre claims here instead of the standard 160 acres, recognizing that the sandy rangeland could not support smaller farms. The federal tree-planting program at Halsey, begun in 1902 under forester Charles E. Bessey, remains the county’s best-known historical undertaking.
