History
Grant County was established on February 4, 1869, formed from parts of Jefferson and Saline counties during Reconstruction and named for U.S. President-elect Ulysses S. Grant. In April 1864, before the county’s creation, the Battle of Jenkins’ Ferry was fought along the Saline River in what is now the county’s southeastern corner, one of the last major Civil War engagements in Arkansas; the site is preserved today as Jenkins’ Ferry Battleground State Park.
