Geography

Warren County sits at the point where the Yazoo River meets the Mississippi River, in the loess bluffs region on the eastern edge of the Mississippi Delta. Bluffs rise sharply above the river floodplain around Vicksburg, while the northern and western parts of the county lie in flatter Delta bottomland crossed by bayous and oxbow lakes. The Mississippi River forms the entire western county line, with Louisiana parishes on the opposite bank.

Warren County was established by legislative act on December 22, 1809, and named for Joseph Warren, the Revolutionary War officer killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Vicksburg, founded in 1811 and incorporated in 1825, takes its name from Methodist missionary Newitt Vick. The county’s defining historical event is the Siege of Vicksburg: after a 47-day Union siege, the Confederate garrison surrendered on July 4, 1863, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River and, alongside Gettysburg the day before, marking a turning point of the Civil War.
