Pemba North Region (Swahili: Mkoa wa Kaskazini Pemba) covers the northern half of Pemba Island. The island lies about 50 kilometres off the Tanzanian mainland, across the Pemba Channel. The 2022 census recorded a population of 272,091 in an area of 574 km2. The regional capital is Wete, a clove port on the west coast. The region’s hills and creeks carry much of Zanzibar’s clove crop.<\/p>\n

        Geography<\/h2>\n

        Pemba North Region is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and east. Pemba South Region (Kusini Pemba) lies south, and the Pemba Channel west. Unlike flat Unguja, Pemba is hilly and green. Deep tidal creeks cut the western side and make natural harbours at Wete, Mkoani and Kojani. The highest ground reaches only about 96 metres. Pemba takes more rain than Unguja, and streams run in the valley bottoms.<\/p>\n

        Ngezi Forest Reserve occupies the north-western tip. It holds the last large stand of Pemba’s original forest, plus two species found nowhere else: the Pemba flying fox and the Pemba scops owl. Msitu Kuu and Ras Kiuyu forest reserves protect smaller blocks in the east. Vumawimbi beach runs along the north coast below Ngezi. Islets sit offshore, including Njao, Fundo, Kokota and Kojani, the last of them densely settled by fishing families.<\/p>\n

        Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

        Cloves set the rhythm here. Pemba grows the larger share of Zanzibar’s clove crop. In the picking seasons around August and December whole villages move into the tree groves, with drying mats laid along every roadside. The Zanzibar State Trading Corporation buys the dried crop, and Wete port ships it out.<\/p>\n

        Households also grow coconut, cassava, banana and rice in the valley bottoms, with breadfruit and mango around homesteads. The east and north-east coasts of Micheweni District fish heavily. Villages there farm seaweed on the tidal flats at Tumbe, Kiuyu and Msuka, and Tumbe holds Pemba’s largest fish auction. Wete, Konde and Tumbe hold the region’s main markets. Tourism is small, and sits near Ngezi, Vumawimbi and the diving grounds off Fundo and Njao.<\/p>\n

        Getting There<\/h2>\n

        Pemba North has no airport of its own. The island’s airport is Karume Airport at Chake Chake, in Pemba South Region, about 30 kilometres south of Wete. It takes flights from Zanzibar City, Dar es Salaam and Tanga. Passenger ferries call at Wete, and at Mkoani in the south, on routes to Zanzibar City, Tanga and Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\n

        One sealed spine road runs the length of Pemba. It links Mkoani and Chake Chake in the south to Wete, then north through Konde to Micheweni and the Ngezi turning. Feeder roads and daladala minibuses reach the coastal villages. Kojani and the smaller islets are reached by boat from Wete and Kiuyu.<\/p>\n
