The Great Rift Valley escarpment runs through the north-west, dropping to Lake Manyara on the Arusha boundary.

Mount Hanang, an extinct volcano of 3,418 metres, is the highest point and stands over Katesh in Hanang District. The Mbulu highlands to the north-west carry the wettest farmland in the region. East and south of Babati the land flattens into the Maasai Steppe, dry grassland and acacia bush covering most of Simanjiro and Kiteto districts.

Tarangire National Park lies entirely inside the region, north-west of Babati along the Tarangire River, and draws large dry-season elephant herds to the river among stands of baobab. Part of Lake Manyara National Park adjoins the region’s northern boundary. Lake Basotu, in Hanang District, and Lake Babati, beside the regional capital, are the main inland waters.

Economy and Local Life

Most people in Manyara Region farm. Maize, beans, pigeon peas, sunflower and finger millet come off the Mbulu and Hanang highlands, and Babati District is one of Tanzania’s larger pigeon pea suppliers, much of it exported to India. Wheat is grown on the Basotu plains, and Magugu grows rice under irrigation from the rift escarpment streams.

Livestock keeping dominates Simanjiro and Kiteto. Maasai herders around Naberera, Terrat, Loiborsoit and Kibaya move cattle between wet-season and dry-season pastures, and cattle markets at Kibaya, Naberera and Dareda handle stock heading for Arusha and Dar es Salaam. The Barabaig, a Datooga-speaking people, keep cattle on the Hanang plains around Basotu and Endasak.

Mining matters in the north-east. The tanzanite mines at Mererani, in Simanjiro District, are the only commercial source of the stone in the world, and the phosphate works at Minjingu in Babati District supply fertiliser plants. Tourism runs on Tarangire, with lodges and camps on the park boundary and Babati as the road junction for visitors.

The Iraqw are the largest group, farming the Mbulu and Karatu highlands. The Barabaig, Maasai, Mbugwe, Gorowa and Asa also live in the region, and Swahili is the common language.

Getting There

Two paved trunk roads cross the region. The T5 runs from Arusha south through Makuyuni, Minjingu, Babati and Kondoa to Dodoma, and is the main route in from both ends. The T14 branches west from Babati through Dareda, Katesh and Singida, giving Hanang and the western districts a tarmac link.

Babati is about 170 km from Arusha and 250 km from Dodoma by road, and buses run daily on both routes. Mbulu is reached by a graded road climbing west from the T5 at Magugu. Kibaya and Naberera, in the eastern rangelands, are served by gravel roads from Kibaya junction on the T5 south of Babati and from Arusha through Simanjiro.

The region has no scheduled passenger airport. Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 200 km north-east, is the nearest full-size airport, and airstrips at Tarangire and Kibaya take light aircraft.

FAQ

How many districts are in Manyara Region?

Six districts, administered through seven councils: Babati Rural, Babati Town, Hanang, Kiteto, Mbulu Rural, Mbulu Town and Simanjiro.

What is the population of Manyara Region?

The 2022 census recorded a population of 1,892,502, up from 1,425,131 in 2012.

What is the capital of Manyara Region?

Babati, a town of 67,445 people on the Arusha-Dodoma road, beside Lake Babati.

When was Manyara Region created?

In 2002, when it was split from Arusha Region.

What towns and villages are in Manyara Region?

This page lists settlements by district, from Babati, Mbulu and Katesh to smaller places such as Magugu, Dongobesh, Naberera, Terrat and Basotu.

Manyara Region (Swahili: Mkoa wa Manyara) lies in northern Tanzania, south of Arusha.
