localities

Chimande

Gombwe

Iwimbi

Mbulamtwango

Geography

Dodoma Region covers 41,311 km², the eighth largest of Tanzania’s 31 regions, and holds about 75 people per km². It borders Singida Region to the west, Manyara Region to the north, Morogoro Region to the east and Iringa Region to the south. Dodoma city stands roughly 480 km inland from the Indian Ocean coast.

Most of the region is a semi-arid plateau between 800 and 1,200 m above sea level. The Rubeho Mountains rise along the eastern edge in Mpwapwa District, and the highest point, Lugunga, reaches 2,352 m. The Bahi Swamp in the west and the Shuriro Swamp collect seasonal drainage that never reaches the sea. Rain falls in one season, November to May, and totals 500 to 800 mm a year. July temperatures average about 15 degrees Celsius and October about 30 degrees Celsius, with wide swings between day and night.

Economy and Local Life

Around 84 percent of households in Dodoma Region farm. Sorghum and bulrush millet suit the short rains better than maize, though maize is still planted widely. Groundnuts, sesame and sunflower are the main cash crops, and sunflower oil pressing accounts for roughly a fifth of the region’s industrial output. Maize milling accounts for more than half.

Dodoma is Tanzania’s wine country. Vineyards concentrate around Dodoma city, Hombolo and Bahi, and the region grows the large majority of the national grape crop. Cattle, goats and sheep are the second economic pillar, kept in numbers across Chamwino, Chemba and Kongwa. Kibaigwa in Kongwa District runs one of the largest maize markets in central Tanzania, drawing traders from Morogoro, Manyara and Dar es Salaam.

The Gogo are the largest ethnic group across Chamwino, Bahi and Mpwapwa, with the Rangi in Kondoa and Chemba and the Kaguru in eastern Mpwapwa. Kondoa District holds the Kondoa rock art sites, a group of painted shelters around Kolo listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Dodoma town itself grew as a station on the German colonial Central Railway, which reached it in 1910.

Getting There

Two trunk roads meet at Dodoma. The T3 runs from Dar es Salaam through Morogoro and Dodoma on to Singida, Nzega and the Rwanda and Burundi borders. The T5 heads south from Dodoma to Iringa. The regional road network runs to about 8,183 km in total.

The Central Line railway crosses the region east to west with nine stations, including Dodoma, Bahi, Kintinku and Saranda. Dodoma Airport serves the city with scheduled domestic flights, and four airstrips serve outlying districts.

FAQ

How many districts are in Dodoma Region?

Seven districts, administered through eight councils: Dodoma City, Chamwino, Kongwa, Mpwapwa, Chemba, Bahi, Kondoa Rural and Kondoa Town.

What is the population of Dodoma Region?

The 2022 census recorded a population of 3,085,625, compared with 2,083,588 in 2012.

What is the capital of Dodoma Region?

Dodoma city, which is also the national capital of Tanzania.
