Region borders Kenya and Kilimanjaro Region to the north, Manyara Region to the west, Morogoro and Pwani regions to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the east. Across the channel lie Pemba North, Pemba South and Zanzibar North regions.

The Usambara Mountains rise in the north-west, split into the West Usambaras around Lushoto and Bumbuli and the East Usambaras above Muheza. Chambolo Peak, at 2,289 metres, is the highest point in the region. The ranges are part of the Eastern Arc, and the forest at Amani in the East Usambaras holds species found nowhere else, including the Usambara weaver, the Usambara eagle-owl and the Amani forest tree frog.

The Pangani is the largest river, running down from Kilimanjaro Region past Korogwe to the sea at Pangani town, and is fed by the Umkomazi, Soni and Lwengera rivers. Rainfall runs from about 1,100 to 1,400 mm on the coast, up to 2,000 mm in the mountains, and down to about 600 mm on the western plateau in Kilindi and Handeni. The hot season, December to March, runs 26 to 32°C; the cool season, May to October, runs 20 to 28°C.

Four protected areas fall in or on the region. Mkomazi National Park sits in the north-west, shared with Kilimanjaro Region. Saadani National Park, on the southern coastal boundary, is the only Tanzanian park with an ocean frontage. Amani Nature Reserve covers the East Usambara forest, and the Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park protects the reef and deep water offshore, where coelacanths have been landed. Dugongs are recorded off Mkinga District. The Amboni Caves, a few kilometres north of Tanga city, form the largest cave system in East Africa.

Economy and Local Life

Agriculture employs most working people. Sisal built the regional economy from the German period onward, and estates still run along the Tanga-Korogwe-Muheza corridor, with Tanga city handling the fibre for export. Coconuts, citrus, cashews, cassava, maize, rice and cotton are the other field crops, and seaweed is farmed on the shallows at Pangani and Mkinga.

The Usambaras grow vegetables for the Dar es Salaam and Tanga markets: cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, sweet pepper and Irish potato come down from Lushoto, Soni, Mlalo, Mlola and Bumbuli by lorry. Tea and cardamom are grown around Amani and Bumbuli, and Lushoto has a long-established dairy trade in stall-fed cattle.

Tanga city is a working port and industrial town, with cement, fertiliser, steel rolling and fish processing. Fishing supports the coastal villages of Pangani, Kigombe, Ushongo, Tongoni, Kwale and the Mkinga shore, most of it small-scale with outrigger canoes and beach seines. Handeni and Kilindi districts, drier and further inland, run on maize, sunflower, sesame, charcoal and cattle, with market days at Handeni, Songe and Kwediboma. Gold has been mined at Magambazi in Handeni District.

The main native groups are the Shambaa of the Usambaras, the Zigua of Handeni and Korogwe, the Bondei around Muheza, the Digo and Segeju along the northern coast, and the Ngulu, Mbugu and Dhaiso inland. Swahili is spoken everywhere and is the first language on the coast. Sunni Islam is the majority faith, following trade contact with the Swahili coast from the ninth and tenth centuries.

Getting There

The main trunk road reaches Tanga city from Segera junction, where it meets the inland road up the Pangani valley through Korogwe, Mombo and Same to Moshi. South from Segera the coastal trunk road runs through Chalinze to Dar es Salaam, about 350 km from Tanga city. North from Tanga city the coast road reaches the Kenyan border at Horohoro and continues to Mombasa. Mombo is the turn-off for the climb to Soni and Lushoto.

Tanga Airport, west of the city, takes scheduled domestic flights to Dar es Salaam, Pemba and Zanzibar. The port of Tanga handles general cargo and is the second-largest seaport in the country. The Tanga-Moshi railway runs inland through Korogwe and Mombo, though passenger service is limited. A vehicle ferry crosses the Pangani River at Pangani town on the coastal road south.

FAQ

How many districts are in Tanga Region?

Eleven councils: Tanga City, Bumbuli, Handeni Rural, Handeni Town, Kilindi, Korogwe Rural, Korogwe Town, Lushoto, Mkinga, Muheza and Pangani.

What is the population of Tanga Region?

The 2022 census recorded a population of 2,615,597, up from 2,045,205 in 2012.
