Uasin Gishu County is county 027 of Kenya’s 47, in the former Rift Valley Province. Eldoret is the capital, and the 2019 census counted 1,163,186 residents across 2,955.3 km². The county sits on the Uasin Gishu plateau, between 1,500 m and 2,700 m above sea level.<\/p>\n

Eldoret received a city charter in August 2024, making it Kenya’s fifth city. The county name comes from the Maasai Uasin Gishu section that held the plateau before the Nandi and Keiyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Uasin Gishu is a broad, gently undulating plateau with few sharp features. The land tilts from about 2,700 m at Timboroa in the south-east down to 1,500 m in the north-west. The Sosiani River crosses Eldoret; the Kipkarren drains west to the Nzoia and streams on the eastern edge feed the Kerio.<\/p>\n

    Kaptagat and Timboroa forests hold the remaining indigenous and plantation cover. Rainfall runs 900–1,200 mm a year with a long wet season from March to September, and nights on the plateau are cold by Kenyan standards.<\/p>\n

    Uasin Gishu borders Trans Nzoia County<\/a> to the north, Elgeyo-Marakwet County<\/a> to the east, Baringo County<\/a> to the south-east. It also borders Kericho County<\/a> to the south, Nandi County<\/a> to the south-west and Kakamega County<\/a> to the west.<\/p>\n

    Demographics<\/h2>\n

    The 2019 census recorded 1,163,186 people in 302,268 households, 581,514 men and 581,647 women. Density averages 394 people per square kilometre, concentrated heavily in Eldoret and its Kapseret and Langas fringes.<\/p>\n

    Nandi and Keiyo Kalenjin are the largest communities. Luhya, Kikuyu, Luo and Kisii families settled through the land-buying companies that broke up the colonial farms after 1963. Eldoret’s universities and hospitals draw residents from across Kenya.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Maize, wheat and dairy carry the rural economy, farmed at a larger scale than in the neighbouring Luhya counties. New KCC runs a milk plant in Eldoret, Rivatex East Africa mills cotton textiles, and timber processing centres on Turbo.<\/p>\n

    Eldoret is the commercial hub of the northern Rift. Moi University, the University of Eldoret and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kenya’s second national referral hospital, are all here. The high-altitude camps at Kaptagat train many of Kenya’s distance runners.<\/p>\n

    Eldoret’s growth has outpaced its services. The 2024 city charter came with commitments on water, drainage and the ring road. The fastest population growth is on the Kapseret, Langas and Huruma fringes, not the old town centre.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    The A104 runs Nakuru–Eldoret–Webuye and carries the northern corridor freight to Uganda. The A1 heads north from Eldoret to Kitale. Nairobi is about 310 km away and Nakuru about 155 km.<\/p>\n

    Eldoret International Airport, 16 km south-west of the city at Kapseret, handles scheduled passenger flights and is a major horticultural freight hub. The metre-gauge railway serves Eldoret; the standard gauge railway does not yet reach the county.<\/p>\n
