    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Baringo runs north to south along the floor and eastern wall of the Kenyan Rift. The Tugen Hills form a long central ridge, rising above 2,600 m near Kabarnet, with the Kerio Valley on their western side and the rift floor to the east. The lowlands of Tiaty, in the north-east, drop below 1,000 m and are hot and semi-arid.<\/p>\n

    Three lakes sit in the county. Lake Baringo is fresh and fed by the Perkerra and Molo rivers. Lake Bogoria is alkaline, lined with hot springs and geysers, and draws large flamingo flocks; it is a Ramsar site and part of the Kenya Lake System World Heritage listing. Lake Kamnarok lies in an oxbow of the Kerio River. Rainfall exceeds 1,000 mm a year in the Lembus highlands around Eldama Ravine but falls below 600 mm on the Tiaty plains.<\/p>\n

    Baringo borders Turkana County<\/a> and West Pokot County<\/a> to the north, Samburu County<\/a> and Laikipia County<\/a> to the east, Nakuru County<\/a> and Kericho County<\/a> to the south, Uasin Gishu County<\/a> to the south-west and Elgeyo-Marakwet County<\/a> to the west.<\/p>\n

    Demographics<\/h2>\n

    The 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census recorded 666,763 residents, giving an average density of about 60 people per square kilometre. Settlement is uneven: the Lembus and Tugen highlands are farmed and densely occupied, while Tiaty carries a few people per square kilometre.<\/p>\n

    The main communities are Kalenjin sub-groups \u2014 Tugen, Lembus and Endorois \u2014 together with Pokot in the north-east and Ilchamus (Njemps) around the southern shore of Lake Baringo. Swahili and English are used in schools, markets and county offices.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming dominates the highlands. Maize, beans, potatoes, wheat and pyrethrum grow around Eldama Ravine, Torongo and Mumberes, with coffee and macadamia on the wetter slopes. The Perkerra Irrigation Scheme at Marigat produces seed maize, watermelons and pawpaw on the rift floor.<\/p>\n

    Livestock keeping runs through the county and is the mainstay in Tiaty: goats, cattle, hides and honey move through markets at Nginyang, Churo and Tangulbei. Fishing supports the shore villages of Kampi ya Samaki and Salabani on Lake Baringo. Tourism is concentrated at the two lakes, with boat trips, birding and the Lake Bogoria hot springs. Weekly markets at Kabarnet, Marigat, Mogotio, Kabartonjo and Eldama Ravine set the local trading calendar. The county governor is Benjamin Cheboi.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    The B4 runs north from Nakuru through Mogotio and Marigat to Loruk at the north end of Lake Baringo. From Marigat a tarmac road climbs the escarpment to Kabarnet, then crosses the Kerio Valley at Chebloch Gorge and continues west to Iten and Eldoret. Eldama Ravine is reached from the Nakuru\u2013Eldoret highway near Mau Summit.<\/p>\n

    Kabarnet is roughly 265 km from Nairobi by road, about five hours through Nakuru. Matatus and buses run daily from Nakuru to Kabarnet, Marigat and Eldama Ravine. The county has airstrips at Kabarnet and Kampi ya Samaki; the nearest scheduled flights are at Eldoret International Airport, about 110 km west of Kabarnet.<\/p>\n
